The Government's recently announced Waste Policy Review focuses on initiatives to reduce, re-use and recycle waste from food and food packaging. Biodegradable waste – such as food waste – accounts for 90% of the direct carbon emissions from the waste sector. Biodegradable packaging market is predicted to achieve about £1.7 bln in 2016 with a five-year CAGR of 20.5% (BCC research, 2011). Compostable packaging materials are well suited for food with high respiration (fruit and vegetables) and short shelf live. This could be disposed with food waste via composting and anaerobic digestion. Compostable packaging could be combined with innovative technologies such as printed electronics to improve performance, differentiate from competitors, strengthen brands and make packaging more interactive.
Speakers:
Tina Benfield, Chartered Institute for Waste Management, covering waste policy review and role of compostable packaging in reduction of food waste
Bruce Drew and Sara Potton, Fresh Technologies UK Ltd, covering compostable packaging materials
Brian Weeks, Interactive Product Solutions Ltd, covering printable electronics and interactive technologies for making packaging more effective
